National Curriculum Development for the History of St. Maarten
St. Maarten's current Social Studies curriculum gives students an introduction to culture, community and civic life, but there is no standardized history curriculum that provides a full and connected understanding of St. Maarten's historical development. Students can therefore learn parts of local history without always seeing how those events connect or how they helped shape the St. Maarten of today.
This project will develop a locally grounded history curriculum that reflects St. Maarten's own history, voices and experiences. It will include local and Caribbean perspectives, oral histories, archival information, and community knowledge. Teacher training and supporting learning materials will help schools put the curriculum into practice.
Objectives
- Develop a standardized history curriculum, approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport.
- Strengthening historical knowledge, cultural identity, and civic responsibility among students.
- Include local narratives, oral histories and Afro-Caribbean and wider Caribbean perspectives.
- Give teachers the training and resources needed to teach St. Maarten history effectively.
- Connect students with the people, places, and experiences that have shaped the island.
