Many of St. Maarten's registered monuments need greater care and visibility. Some sites lack regular maintenance, signage, or a clear historical explanation. There is also no single digital system where residents, students, and visitors can easily learn about the monuments and the stories connected to them.
This project will remap, document and improve access to St. Maarten's monuments and heritage sites. Historical research, community knowledge, and updated land information will support the work. Selected sites will also receive cleaning, landscaping or other improvements, while signage, digital access, and a heritage platform will make them more accessible to all.
Objectives
- Create an accurate and updated overview of St. Maarten's monuments.
- Protect and improve the visibility of important heritage sites.
- Make historical information available at the monument sites and online.
- Connect monuments more closely with education, community life and cultural tourism.
- Encourage greater public awareness and responsibility for protecting heritage.
