Genealogical Research for Descendants – Regional project led by Saba

Many descendants of enslaved people in St. Maarten face major gaps when trying to trace their family histories. Records may have been lost, never created, or spread across archives in different countries and islands. This has made it difficult for many families to access information about their ancestry and reconnect with parts of their history.

This is a regional project involving St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius and is being implemented by Saba. Sint Maarten is not responsible for the implementation or financial administration of this project.

This project will combine genealogical research, archival information, oral histories, and voluntary DNA research to help build a clearer picture of ancestral connections. The work will include research involving St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius and will be carried out with attention to informed consent, ethical oversight, privacy and secure handling of information.

Objectives

  • Help descendants access information about family and ancestral histories.
  • Build a stronger genealogical and historical record for St. Maarten.
  • Make relevant archival information more accessible.
  • Collect and preserve oral histories and family narratives.
  • Support regional research into shared histories between St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius.

Sint Maarten contribution to the regional project: $750,000, transferred directly by the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) to Saba for implementation. This amount does not form part of the Future Roots funds managed in Sint Maarten.
