Building St. Maarten's future through history, heritage and culture
Future Roots is a multi-year program developed by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport following funding made available by the Government of the Netherlands through the Slavery Apology Fund. Through eight projects being implemented in St. Maarten, together with St. Maarten's participation in a regional genealogical research project led by Saba, Future Roots invests in our history, education, cultural heritage and cultural infrastructure, turning acknowledgement of the past into lasting opportunities for the future.
How Future Roots works
Future Roots will move from planning to implementation through a structured process designed to support community participation, effective delivery, and accountability.
- 1
Listen & Plan
Projects will be developed through research, stakeholder consultation, and community input.
- 2
Design & Deliver
Plans will be translated into practical interventions, services, facilities, and resources through phased implementation.
- 3
Monitor & Account
Progress, expenditure, and project results will be monitored throughout implementation, with appropriate financial oversight and reporting.
- 4
Build for the Future
Each project is intended to leave lasting knowledge, capacity, resources or infrastructure that can continue to benefit St. Maarten beyond the program period.
