Archiving & Digitization
Image placeholder — Archiving & Digitization
Historical records related to St. Maarten, including records connected to slavery and colonialism, are spread across different institutions and islands. Many important documents are held outside St. Maarten, particularly in Curaçao and the Netherlands. This makes it difficult for residents, students, researchers, and families to know what records exist or gain easy access to them.
This project will inventory, digitize and improve access to archival material related to St. Maarten. The project will also include community participation, training local professionals, and the development of public digital access to historical documents and related information.
Objectives
- Identify and inventory historical records related to St. Maarten.
- Digitize important materials, particularly records related to slavery and colonialism.
- Make archival information easier for the St. Maarten public to access.
- Increase local capacity via digital archiving and data management.
- Include community voices and local interpretation of how historical information is presented.
